SWARM
SWARM supports refugees in our city in many ways. This work is for everyone. Many people from various Lutheran (and non-Lutheran) congregations continue to be involved in this way, there is always work to do, volunteers are always welcome.
Highlights of 2024:
● We continue to assist new Canadian families. This year we have worked with families from the Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Egypt, and many other African countries.
● We have signed on as the CG for a sponsorship of an Afghan family of three. The sponsorship is initiated and carried out by two brothers from Afghanistan and we simply act as guarantor for the Canadian Government to allow it to happen.
● SWARM Furniture Bank - We have assisted over 400 families since May 2022. We collect and find homes for furniture and household items for new families. We have a storage facility and work collaboratively with various other agencies to share resources and identify need. Tania Patterson coordinates this work and help is always needed
● We have assisted families to access the Food Bank, and other food providers
● We provided Christmas hampers and Christmas trees and lights for many new families. These came from various Lutheran churches and families that volunteered to create Christmas for a newcomer
● We coordinate with other agencies in the city (CCIS, Centre for Newcomers, CIWA, etc) in assisting the many refugee arrivals
● Congregations continue to support our work, provide facilities to meet, collect donated items, encourage and facilitate monetary donations, welcome newcomers into their midst and help them.
How Can You Help:
● Personal visits to new families to encourage them and help them know that they are welcome and that there are Canadians who care. They can practice their English, learn about resources and customs, and feel connected. Contact Marla Mulloy (403-617-6494) or calgaryswarm@gmail.com
● We need volunteers for Furniture Bank work bees - help to sort and organize donated items, pack boxes for new families, collect household items from donors. Contact Tania Patterson (587-225-8783) or calgaryswarm@gmail.com if you can assist.
● Employment opportunities - this is a big need: email calgaryswarm@gmail.com
We meet regularly.
Our CORE committee is composed of 18-20 people. We usually meet at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month at Advent Lutheran Church and on Zoom. You would be welcome to join us and help to serve and support the newcomer community in our city. It is fun and it is fulfilling. You can contact us at calgaryswarm@gmail.com for details.
