Christian education is at the very heart of the church. In the educational process the Spirit of God encounters people of all ages so that they are nurtured in faith, grow in knowledge and experience, and are inspired and empowered to live as disciples of Jesus Christ. This call to discipleship compels us to share our faith and serve others in the home, the community, and in God’s world.
Nurturing the Faith
Sunday school at Advent is for children age 3 through grade 6. Classes are held at 9:15 am beginning the first Sunday after Labor Day in September, and continuing through June. The children and youth gather first for 15 minutes of lively singing, prayer, and the sharing of offerings. Then they go to their classes for stories, crafts, reading, and talking about our Christian faith.
Curriculum: Akaloo is the name of the curriculum we are using in our Sunday School, and is inspired by the Greek word meaning “to follow”. We are excited about using this web and print-based resource.
Adult Class
A bible study is presented during the education hour preceding worship. Occasionally a speaker is brought in on a special topic. Coffee is always on!
Confirmation
Confirmation at Advent is a program for young people in Grade 7 and 8. It is “a pastoral and educational ministry of the church which helps the baptized child of God, through Word and Sacrament, to identify more deeply with the Christian community and participate more fully in its mission”. In this congregation, that means weekly classes and serving on Sunday morning as an acolyte or Nursery helper. If you’re a senior Confirm and, it may mean being paired with a mentor during the season of Lent. Classes are on Wednesday at 4:45 – 6:00 pm. If you would like your child to participate, please call the church office @ 239-6966.
“Splashed With Promise” is the name we have chosen for Advent’s baptismal program, our ministry to children who are baptized in the congregation and their parents. To establish, nurture and maintain a lifestyle of faith, love and service in the renewing grace of God.
Our VISION is to root the congregation of the “First Church”, your own home, in the gift of Baptism, thereby strengthening both your family and the family of Advent Lutheran Church.
Our MISSION is to develop and initiate a ministry to families which will help children, youth, parents, grandparents, god-parents, and other adults establish, nurture and maintain a lifestyle of faith, love and service in the renewing grace of God.
Advent Lutheran presents a Faith Chest and a stole to each baptized child. The chest is part of a ministry to pass on the faith through a visible means, which symbolizes the commitment of the congregation to the child and his/her parents. Splashed with Promise is also a way to present the parents and child with tools for teaching and learning, to nurture the promises made on the day of baptism. The stole, placed on the child by the Pastor, symbolizes the “yoke” of the child to Christ and to the congregation.
